Choosing Solo Selections

The teacher and student choose two pieces, preferably of contrasting style, to be played at the festival. See Suggested Levels to determine what level your student should register under.

Please note: If a student receives a Superior rating, they must advance to the next level the following year. Teacher and student may decide to repeat a level if they received a rating other than Superior the previous year.

Selections should be kept under 12 min. Long repeats should be omitted, except in short compositions such as at the Primary Level. Long Piano interludes should cut as well.

Piano accompaniment is required when applicable; CD accompaniment is not allowed. Students must list their accompanist on their entry form to avoid scheduling conflicts. Forms that do list an accompanist will not be accepted and may be subject to a $10 late fee.

Solos must be memorized to receive Gold Cup Points.

Choosing Duet and Ensemble Selections

Same as outlined above.

Duet and Ensemble Selections do not need to be memorized.

Gold Cup

Students are awarded Gold Cups when they have earned 15 points, 30 points, 45 points, etc. A student can earn up to 5 points a year in each event, Solo and/or Ensemble.

Remember that all solos selections must be memorized for Gold Cup Points. Duet and Ensemble entries may use music.

Gold Cup Points are recorded from the highest rating received if performing in more than one Duet, Quartet, or Ensemble. Points from different events cannot be combined such as solo and duet, duet and quartet, violin solo and viola solo, etc.

If a student has earned at least 10 points towards a Gold Cup, they may participate for one year after High School.

Students who have earned a Gold Cup will receive a letter from the Gold Cup Chairman and are encouraged to participate in a recital where they will perform one selection from the festival and receive their Gold Cup.

Gold Cup Recitals are held after the festival in the Beaver, Cedar City, Kanab and St. George areas:
